Everton goalscorer Coady hails Pickford after victory at Southampton

Everton scored twice in a game for the first time this season as they came from behind to beat Southampton in the Premier League at St Mary's.

After a drab first 45 minutes, the match burst into life when Joe Aribo drilled Saints ahead with a fine left-footed finish early in the second half.

The Toffees had scored just five goals in their opening seven games but turned the game around with two strikes in three minutes.

Conor Coady swept them level from Amadou Onana's excellent knockdown before Dwight McNeil flashed them ahead with a fierce shot that beat Gavin Bazunu at his near post.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, on his return from a thigh injury, made a fine save to deny Adam Armstrong, while debutant Duje Caleta-Car volleyed over a great late chance to earn Saints a point.

Coady later said: "First half we played really well but lacked a bit of a ruthless edge in the final third. I thought we deserved the three points as we were fantastic bar that little spell. It's another win to build on.

"My eyes lit up a little bit at the back post when I saw it pop down. It was important we got it and that we bounced back pretty quickly from going behind. We work a lot on second-phase set-pieces, trying to make sure we do them right, so it's pleasing when something like that comes off for us."

On returning goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, he added: "He's top-drawer, I've spoken about him a million times even before I've come to the club, about how incredible a keeper is.

"When we lose him, he's a massive miss – when Asmir Begovic came in he did fantastic but you saw what Jordan brought today, he's an outstanding keeper and long may that continue for us."
