FA withdraws Team GB from Rio Olympics

Sky Sports report that the Football Association has formally withdrawn its proposal to enter Great Britain Men's and Women's sides at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Jonathan Hall, FA Director of Football Services, has reportedly written to the other British associations after failing to receive support from other member associations. The plan was apparently rejected by the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish FA.

Outgoing FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce has previously confirmed that the FIFA would not sanction a Team GB side without the support of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

"They confirmed to me that the British Olympic Association would not receive FIFA's permission to enter a Team GB football team without the consent of all four British associations." Boyce told Sky Sports News HQ in Zurich.

"FIFA has the final say on whether a football team can be entered for the Olympic Games."
