Chelsea fullback Bertrand keeping Villa option open

Chelsea fullback Ryan Bertrand is keeping an open mind over a permanent deal with Aston Villa.

Bertrand is contracted to Chelsea until summer 2016, but his opportunities have been limited there and he is open to the idea of leaving Stamford Bridge.

"I had my own personal goals to come in and to firstly get that fitness up in the first few games," Bertrand told the Birmingham Mail.

"Once I get it up to scratch hopefully I can really start pushing on.

"Paul Lambert was one of the main catalysts of me coming to this club, because he is a manager whose teams play the way that I like to play.

"He really encourages you to express yourself on the pitch so it's always a pleasure to play this way.

"To play with the boys has been fantastic, on and off the pitch. In training there's a fantastic mentality from all the boys and it's a fantastic area to learn in."
