Southampton bitterly disappointed to miss out on league cup chance - Davis

Southampton's Capital One Cup run ended in the worst possible fashion on Wednesday night.

The Saints skipped away with an early lead thanks to Sadio Mane's 41st-second header but eventually capitulated to Liverpool, losing 6-1 in the quarter-final at St Mary's.

It was a dire night for the south coast club and midfielder Steven Davis admits it was a chance gone begging for the Saints to deliver an evasive piece of silverware.

"Obviously, we came off the pitch very disappointed," he said. "We thought we had a good opportunity to progress in the competition. We knew it was going to be a tough game," he told the club's YouTube channel.

"We spoke before the game about making a good start and we were delighted with the way we did, but we'll have to assess the game obviously now.

"It's hard to speak about it and reflect on it straight after the game with the emotions and feeling the disappointment, but we obviously could have done better on some of the goals we conceded and we need to look at that."

Davis admitted it was a negative evening for the Saints but implored his teammates to get back to what they know best in order to quickly recover from the magnitude of the defeat.

"There's no positive way to look at it really for me. It's a hugely disappointing night, a hugely disappointing end result and, as I say, it's important we just get back to basics maybe and get back to doing what we were good at and make sure we work hard and get back to keeping clean sheets and hopefully winning games," he added.
