Pardew: Newcastle got lucky landing Perez

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew admits they were lucky to land former Tenerife striker Ayoze Perez.

Perez has been a revelation for the Toon this season.

Pardew told the Evening Chronicle: "We got lucky a little bit, as we have somebody in Spain who alerted us. We got wind of this young player and there were some big clubs interested in him.

"We made him a very good offer, and it has paid off. We weren't supremely confident he would be the player he has become in the last few weeks, and he still has a lot to do, bit so far, he is doing really, really well."

Is there a danger he may get ahead of himself? Newcastle know that there are plenty of aspects of his game that crave improvement but Pardew doubts that he will go that way.

"His advisers and his family have all done a great job because he has integrated himself into the group very quickly. He is a nice, bright boy and we couldn't be happier with him.

"It hasn't surprised me, the goals he's scored, because that's his strength. What has surprised me is some of his link-up play and movement. He also has clever, technical feet to get him out of tricky situations."
