Police to investigate racist abuse claims by Sunderland striker Bent

Police will probe claims that Darren Bent's mother was racially abused at the DW stadium.

The Daily Mail says Bent and his mother will today be interviewed by police investigating claims she was racially abused by a Sunderland supporter at Wigan on Saturday.

The Sunderland striker alerted the public to the incident at the DW Stadium on his Twitter page following his side's 1-0 defeat.

A Sunderland supporter is believed to have hurled abuse at canteen staff and nearby spectators, including Bent's mother, after he was not served.

He is alleged to have shouted: "Don't treat me like I am black".

Bent told followers on his Twitter page: 'So we get beat by Wigan and to make matters worse my mum gets racially abused by a Sunderland fan. I won't stand for that.'
