Rooney has managed Plymouth Argyle, DC United, Derby County and Birmingham City in what has been a mixed bag in management for the former striker.
He departed each club without lifting any silverware and also oversaw Derby's drop to League One in 2022. Now, Rooney has gone all in on punditry and is working with the BBC on their World Cup coverage.
Rooney admitted he is unlikely to return to management this week but did reveal that he would be open to stepping away from punditry if he were offered one role.
"I think you always have regrets, and (I) reflect on what I've done. I think the biggest regret I have is the Birmingham City job, in terms of the timing of when I took over from John Eustace."
On if he would return to the touchline: "Probably not. Of course, I've never closed doors and never say never, but at the moment – where I am now, where my head space is – I wouldn't."
On if he would join Michael Carrick at United: "Of course I would. It's a no-brainer..
"I'm not begging a job here by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would. Appointing the manager is the most important thing."
Carrick’s current backroom staff includes Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, Travis Binnion and Craig Mawson. There are no plans to include Rooney as it stands as a way back into coaching seems unlikely next season.
