Arsenal drew with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night as they seek a better performance in the second leg to book their place in the final.
The Gunners have equalled their longest ever unbeaten run in the Champions League, going 13 successive matches without defeat for the second time after doing so between March 2005 and April 2006 under Arsene Wenger.
It was a solid performance away from home as Arsenal’s midfield controlled the affair which included former Liverpool target Zubimendi.
Gerrard, speaking after the game, revealed that he is frustrated with Reds as they missed out on the Spaniard in the summer of 2024.
"He's been given a really key role. At Liverpool, we were linked with for a long time, watched a lot of him on the back of that - (I was) disappointed that we didn't sign him on the back of that.
"Arsenal have got a fantastic player, really intelligent. I think he'll have a big boost being back in Spain tonight, back where he's from. Arsenal need a big performance from him tonight.
“(Antoine) Griezmann and (Julian) Alvarez like to come short so he'll have to switch on, he's going to have to be aware. At the same time, he's got to connect Arsenal's play. He's got a pivotal role.”
The second leg in North London will take place on Tuesday, three days after Arsenal play host to Fulham in the Premier League. Zubimendi should play a huge once more as he enjoys life in North London on the hunt for a European title unlike Liverpool who are set to go trophyless.
