Messi says he felt he had "let everyone down" after his penalty miss against Egypt before inspiring Argentina to a 3-2 comeback win to reach the Quarter Final against Switzerland over the weekend.
The legendary forward also missed a spot kick in his country's 2-0 victory over Austria earlier in the tournament, showing that he is mortal after all.
After failing from the spot multiple times, many sides may think about swapping Messi for the likes of Julian Alvarez of Alexis Mac Allister, but Petit told to BOYLE Sports, who offer football odds that this is not the case.
“The Golden Boot will be tough because even when Messi misses a penalty, he scores.
“Who's gonna take the responsibility for that? (Taking penalties) Do you think a teammate is going to tell Messi they should take the penalty? No. Messi is different.
“Even when he misses, he makes up for it by scoring other goals and provides assists. Many players would crumble after a miss, but he has huge belief and talent.
“Everybody trusts him. He lost balls during the game, but his teammates don't say anything to him because they know he will produce something to make up for it.”
Messi has converted only four of his last seven for Argentina dating back to the 2022 World Cup. Whether he will keep his role as penalty taker against England on Wednesday night is yet to be seen.
