Fernandes, who has been linked with United for over a month, is set to leave West Ham this summer following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season.
West Ham have set an asking price of £80M for the 21-year-old who was seen as the perfect addition to United’s midfield next season, which has a Casemiro shaped hole.
Despite rumours over the past several weeks, Fernandes is now close to a move to North London, where Tottenham are ready to snap him up as per transfer expert Matteo Moretto.
“Tottenham is very close to reaching an agreement with Mateus Fernandes on the contract.
“There have still been no official negotiations with West Ham.
“Mateus Fernandes, also on the radar of other big clubs, is open to signing for Tottenham.”
The Hammers are in a position where they can demand a significant transfer fee after signing the midfielder last season but the club must also offload players before the start of the new campaign and Fernandes may offer them a huge chance to cash in.
The Athletic report West Ham need to raise £150M this summer following their relegation to the Championship and as they seek to sell, Tottenham are leading the way for Fernandes.
