Liverpool relied on late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah to secure their opening day win over Bournmouth last Friday and will be hoping for a much better performance against the Magpies.
Slot avoids questions on Isak and Guehi
The game is overshadowed by recent drama surrounding striker Alexander Isak and Slot brushed aside questions on the Swedish striker and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi who have both been linked to the side in recent weeks.
“What I can tell you is not a lot. And if someone else asks that question, it's going to be the same answer. So, as I've said many times and shown, I could impact game with who we had on the bench, so it would be much nicer to talk about who we have but I understand.”
Newcastle will be a tough test
Questions then turned to their opponents and Slot had a lot of praise for Newcastle and their intensity which has been lacking with Isak on the sidelines.
“Nothing to do with what's in the media. When you got to Newcastle, you know what to expect. We played them three times last season and twice their intensity levels were above us. I don't think they need anything add to be intense at St. James' Park.
“It's a very good team. They can make it a fight. They have players who are so good on the ball. One of the best teams and one of the most difficult teams to face in the league.”
Frimpong out for a number of weeks
Slot next revealed some shock news that Jeremie Frimpong will be out for a number of weeks and will be replaced with Conor Bradley who will be happy for a run in the first team once again.
“Conor trained with us for a few minutes today for the first time. Medical team was completely right about Jeremie to take him off because he's out until the end of the international break. We felt Jeremie had an issue in his hamstring - the medical team did.
“They were right. A good call from them as otherwise he could have been out for even longer.”
Leoni has settled in
The questions then switched to new signing Giovanni Leoni who arrived from Parma this summer and Slot had a lot of praise for the teenager who looks to have settled right in.
“He is a good-looking guy! Like most Italians, he's trained three times now I think. Transfer fee you can expect he is quite grow up for his age and I saw that. A 18yo who plays like he's been here longer, fast, comfortable on the ball. He's had three good sessions. It tells you a lot about this group, that you feel at ease from the start.”
Chiesa will get his chance
Chiesa scored a late goal in Liverpool's game against The Cherries last week and has quickly become a cult hero for The Reds. Slot was eager to state that the Italian maestro will get his chance in the side as long as he stays fit.
"If he's more available then he already has more chances to impact our results or his playing time. But then it's about him staying as fit as he is at the moment. I see a totally different Federico now than large parts of last season."
Liverpool will be quiet in the transfer market
Finally, Slot opened up on the last few weeks of the transfer market and revealed his side will be quiet despite chasing both Isak and Guehi which is no secret to fans.
"I don't think it will be a busy couple of weeks in the window. That would mean I'm unhappy with the squad but I'm very happy. Having two for each position is ideal but I'd sooner have less than more as you'd have to disappoint a lot of people. But if there are players who can really make us better than the club has shown, they can bring them in. But only if things are right - the right player, fee and position."
