Ten-man Paraguay scored the fastest goal of the World Cup to secure a 1-0 victory over Turkey, who depart the tournament not only without winning but also without scoring a single goal.
The 62 shots combined in their first two games against Paraguay and Australia were the most without a goal in any two-match span in the World Cup on record in data collected since 1966
Guler's vow
Guler’s side are now guaranteed to finish bottom of their group regardless of their result against USA and the winger spoke after the game about how he and his side are feeling after such a crushing result.
"We are ashamed. We apologise to all our people," Guler said. "We play in very big teams and we need to show this on the field. We couldn’t score in two matches.
“Throughout my national team career, I will do everything I can to make them forget this tournament. We apologise to our people."
Goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir spoke along the same lines as Güler as the team come to terms with their World Cup campaign.
"I apologize to my country. We wanted to make them proud, but we have not succeeded. There were high expectations and we have not lived up to them.
“I also apologize to those who came all the way here. There is nothing to say about the match. My teammates gave everything, we fought with all our strength", he stated.
