One of Chelsea's most intriguing decisions ahead of the new season suddenly carries even more interest after Valentin Barco found himself at the centre of one of the World Cup's biggest talking points.

The Argentina international dominated headlines following his side's dramatic 2-1 semi-final victory over England, despite not playing a single minute.

Barco first attracted attention when he sprinted onto the pitch to celebrate Enzo Fernandez's late equaliser, appearing to celebrate directly in front of England's players. Footage of the incident spread across social media and has been widely cited as the trigger for tensions that continued after full-time.

Following the final whistle, Barco was again involved in ugly scenes when England midfielder Jude Bellingham struck him on the back of the head before other players intervened. The confrontation has become one of the defining images from Wednesday's semi-final.

For Chelsea, however, the incident adds another layer to a player they are already preparing to welcome.

Barco spent last season at Strasbourg after leaving Brighton, impressing in France and in the Europa Conference League.

Strasbourg and Chelsea are both owned by BlueCo, and an agreement has already been put in place for the 21-year-old to move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Barco can play left-back and in midfield and the move was organised before Xabi Alonso was appointed Chelsea head coach - meaning Barco's future will now form part of the Spaniard's assessment of the squad ahead of the new campaign.

At present, there has been no official announcement of the signing - but there is also no indication that Chelsea intend to cancel or alter the agreement.

There is some uncertainty around the actual plans for him, though.

Regardless of where he starts the campaign, Barco's profile has risen dramatically over the past 24 hours.

Known previously for his technical quality and versatility, the Argentine has now become one of the tournament's most talked-about personalities after his confrontational celebrations against England went viral worldwide.

Chelsea's decision over his immediate future was already an interesting one. After Wednesday night's events, it will become even more closely watched.
