Top players who didn’t make it to the World Cup such as Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Levi Colwill as well as new signings Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha and Dastan Satpaev were in training this week alongside Alonso who is already shaping his side.

Alonso is ready to make an impact

Speaking to the media, Alonso first spoke on what excites him about taking charge of Chelsea and how ready he is to take such a huge role in West London.

"The excitement is the club, the squad, the opportunity from the owner to come to this great club and to create excitement, respond with the supporters, to win games and be successful."

"I want to enjoy it, I want to be part of this club, work together with the board of directors, with the players, with the staff around.

"I see that it's a club with a great potential we need for sure to make important decisions, the right decisions, but I think that they have a strong base already built.

"Now we have to build and build this mentality, to be competitive on the pitch, to win games and enjoy it."

Fernandez to stay?

The Spanish coach was then tested on the future of a number of players including Alejandro Garnacho and Enzo Fernandez who reports claim are set to leave the club this summer. Alonso admitted that he wants to hold on to Fernandez despite his links to Real Madrid.

"We have spoken, but that reminds private."

Do you want to keep him at Chelsea: "Yes."

On Garnacho: "Well the situation is that we have spoken with the sporting directors. There is an interest for him from other clubs. So let's see how this develops. But hopefully, it finishes in the best possible way for other clubs."

Alonso impressed by Palmer

Finally, Alonso was asked about Palmer who of course returned to training this week. The former Bayer Leverkusen boss revealed that he is impressed by the England star who will be pivotal next season.

"We have had a few training sessions already. From the first day you can see he is a special talent. It's not easy to have one of those, you notice his quality and how he wants to play, his decisions. I'm happy that he comes in a good mood, with a good mindset to have a great season, we are looking forward to getting the best out of him. He will be a key player."
