Former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has signed a four-year deal to succeed Liam Rosenior as the club's permanent manager, but McFarlane takes charge of their final home game of the season as the Spaniard will arrive on July 1st.
Three points are imperative
The Blues can still finish eighth and secure Conference League football for next term, but are three points behind eighth-placed Brentford at this stage of proceedings.
McFarlane, who has had mixed results with the West London side, spoke on the Tottenham clash as his side aims to climb back up the table.
"We're very, very focused. We need to win the next two games to give ourselves the best chance to finish as high in the table as possible and get European football.
“The players have showed fight and heart in the last two games. For me, that's not an issue. Everyone knows about the rivalry but both teams also have lots to play for. Both teams are fighting for the points, so we shouldn't need to add extra motivation but it will naturally be there.”
McFarlane can't wait to work with Alonso
Alonso steps into a Chelsea role following the sacking of Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior earlier this season. McFarlane admitted he was delighted to hear the news of him joining the club last week.
“Really exciting news. Great coach with a massive pedigree. We're all really looking forward to working with Xabi.”
How big Chelsea are to attract Alonso: “It doesn't surprise me, we're a massive club with some of the best players in the world.”
Finally, McFarlane was questioned on if players are excited to work with Alonso after so many changes of leadership in the past few years which has impacted their performances on the pitch.
"Everyone is excited. He's a great coach, won major trophies, a great playing career. He will have lots of respect from everyone. We're very excited."
