Bayern Munich kicked off their 2026/27 season with a 2-1 German Super Cup final win over Borussia Dortmund.

Captain Manuel Neuer lifted the trophy at Signal Iduna Park - for his eighth Super Cup triumph - as Vincent Kompany's team now look ahead to their Bundesliga title defence.

Neuer's future in Bavaria remains as a key focus with the 40-year-old out of contract next summer amid the growing expectation he's ready to retire from football in 2027.

He's already stepped down from national team duty, following Germany's elimination at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and he spoke frankly over his next step after the victory over old rivals Dortmund.

"Now is the time to enjoy everything once again. Then I’ll see how the season goes. But basically, I believe this could be the last one."

Neuer's 128 caps for Germany places him fifth on their all-time list and he occupies the same spot on Bayern's appearance list with 599.

However, the incoming months could see him overtake two club icons, in Gerd Muller (613) and former No.1 Oliver Kahn (632).
