Iran’s national team will attempt to boycott the US at the 2026 World Cup but not the World Cup itself.

Iran’s participation at the finals in the US, Canada and Mexico has been in doubt since the US and Israel launched a military intervention in the country which has caused mayhem ahead of the tournament.

Iran was one of the first nations to qualify for the finals as the nation continue to prepare for the World Cup which runs from June 11th to July 19th and is being staged in the US, Mexico and Canada.

As chaos continues, Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation, spoke publicly about the team’s World Cup plans.

“We will boycott the United States, but we will not boycott the World Cup.”

When asked whether Mexico was open to hosting the matches, he said: “Yes.” She added: “Mexico maintains diplomatic relations with every country in the world, therefore we will wait to see what Fifa decides.”

Iran are set to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, followed by Egypt in Seattle in games that they hope can be moved elsewhere as the war rages on.

US President Donald Trump said that while the Iranian men were welcome to play in the US, it might not be appropriate for their "life and safety".

There is also the prospect of Iran and the US facing each other in the round of 32 in Dallas on July 3rd just one day before Independence Day.
