Iran's sports minister Ahmad Donyamali has said that the country will not take part in this summer's World Cup as the country pull out of the tournament.

Iran are scheduled to face Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand in Los Angeles and Seattle for this summer’s World Cup, but conflict looks to have ruined their chances of competing in the competition.

The country's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in joint United States-Israeli attacks this week and the conflict still rages on as the World Cup approaches.

Donyamali stated that Iran will not travel to the America for the tournament in what is a shock move from the nation.

"Since this corrupt government assassinated our leader, we have no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup.

"In view of the malicious measures taken against Iran, two wars were forced upon us within eight or nine months, and several thousand of our people were killed. Therefore, we definitely have no possibility of participating in this way."

The US will co-host the World Cup with Canada and Mexico but as Iran’s opening game are all in America, it makes their involvement almost impossible.

Iran are welcome to compete

Despite this, FIFA chief Gianni Infantino confirmed earlier this month that despite the conflict, Iran are welcome to compete in an attempt to bring countries together.

"During the discussions, President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States."

"We all need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together now more than ever, and I sincerely thank the President of the United States for his support, as it shows once again that Football Unites the World."
