John Terry has ripped into Djed Spence after his poor start under England boss Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel has shown faith in the player as he started him against Ghana at left-back before bringing him on at right-back against Panama.

Spence also started against DR Congo and received the lowest ranking on the pitch as he was replaced by John Stones in the second half.

Tuchel has launched multiple furious touchline rants at Spence that have gone viral during the World Cup, creating a sense that the Tottenham star could easily lose his place in defence.

Spence has played in all four of England's World Cup games so far, but Terry admitted this week that he is simply not good enough as Tuchel prepares to face Mexico on Monday morning.

“I don't know if you've seen the images and the videos of him going mad at Spence again in the game from the throw-in. I'm not saying he's picking him out - but he seems like he's having a proper dig at him.” Terry told Piers Morgan's World Cup Uncensored show.

“Listen, I'm not his fan. I don't think he's a good defender, I don't think he's a good footballer. He's played in a really struggling Spurs side this year.

“But I will say I've not seen Tuchel do that to anyone else. It just seems to be on two or three occasions he's dug Spence out.

“But also, for me, he's then relied on him and played him again. I agree it's kind of mixed messaging.”

Spence is England’s only fit right-back after Reece James suffered a hamstring injury. Tuchel decided to not call up Trent Alexander-Arnold for the tournament, a choice he may now be regretting.
