Moises Caicedo is now Ecuador's official captain as they prepare to face Mexico at the World Cup.

Ecuador became only the second side in the 21st century to be goalless in their opening two group matches but still reach the knockout stages, matching Greece’s achievement in 2014.

However, after a stunning win over Germany, Ecuador made history as they advanced beyond the group stage for the second time in what is an incredible achievement.

The South American nation have only featured in the World Cup knockout stages once before, with that clash ending in a 1-0 loss to England in the last 16 in 2006.

Ahead of the game, some huge news has hit the national side as former West Ham United and Everton player Enner Valencia has handed the captain’s armband to Caicedo

Valencia told the squad: “Once, in Argentina, before a match, the coaching staff and the leaders met with me and told me they wanted me to be the captain.

“It is a great responsibility, and it has been the absolute greatest honour of my career to lead this group and represent our country.

“But looking at this group right now, and looking at where we are heading, my only priority at this stage is the well-being, the growth, and the internal harmony of this family.

“A true leader also knows when it is time to step aside and uplift the next generation.”

Caicedo already has 64 caps for Ecuador at just 24 years old and will now lead his side against Mexico in what is one of the biggest clashes in the nation’s history.

The two nations have met 28 times previously, with Mexico winning 17, Ecuador four and seven ending in draws. A win for Ecuador would be an unbelievable event for the nation as supporters hope Caicedo can be the difference maker on Wednesday.
