Germany striker Deniz Undav has called for his side to become more aggressive as their World Cup campaign rages on.

Ecuador stunned already-qualified Germany with a 2-1 comeback win in New Jersey to reach the World Cup knockout stages in what was an incredible feat for the South American side.

Germany struggled against an Ecuador side who failed to win their opening two games without scoring as they pulled off their most disappointing game of the season so far.

Speaking after the game, striker Deniz Undav called for the side to ramp up their aggression as Ecuador walked all over them this week.

"Ecuador were more aggressive and sharper than we were. That's something we need to learn from and draw the right conclusions. We weren't as direct in our play and we didn't create as many chances," the striker said.

"We must defend ourselves more. If it gets nasty, then we have to be nasty too."

Despite these comments, manager Julian Nagelsmann backed his side when asked about a lack of intensity in his side:

"Please stop with that nonsense, honestly. Why wouldn't the boys want to go full throttle?" he said. "No, they didn't want it more. They simply took a bit more risk in many situations."

"Of course, we made different substitutions than we might have if we urgently needed a goal. But I can't tell any player now that he didn't give his all. That's far too cliché for me," he added.

The four-time world champions opened their campaign with a 7-1 demolition of debutants Curacao before beating Ivory Coast.

Germany next face one of Paraguay, South Korea, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Scotland, depending on how results go this weekend.
