Daniele de Rossi is delighted with the response of Genoa's players since taking charge.

De Rossi, after succeeding Patrick Vieira in November, has guided Genoa from near the dropzone to a comfortable mid-table position.

He said today: "There have been a series of factors that have made things go well. There's no coach who can do well without the help of the club and the players.

"Clubs need a coach and a group of players who do things well while they monitor and manage the club.  Genoa under Vieira, I've always said, was getting fewer points than they deserved on the pitch. That's football.

"The difference is how you handle negative moments. There was a time when we got two points in five games. Sucu and Blazquez have always been close to me, I've never felt a hint of abandonment.

"And since I've had times in the past where I've felt less confident after the first negative results, I can only emphasize this."

De Rossi also said: "We're born coaches with ideas, fantasies, and sometimes utopias. With idols and coaches to emulate, but along the way you have to figure out what you need and you have to tone down your firm beliefs a bit.

"I feel like I've improved along this journey thanks to the players who have always given their all. First and foremost, I want to instill a soul in the boys, then we'll add the rest.

"You don't need just a soul to play football; a coach must be good at getting the best out of him, but if you don't start with a soul that won't turn its back on you in difficult times, it doesn't exist."
