Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has revealed that manager Mikel Arteta must win the Premier League.

Arsenal’s draw at Stamford Bridge against title rivals Chelsea prolonged their unbeaten run to a remarkable 17 matches since August's 1-0 reverse against Liverpool, in which Dominik Szoboszlai fired in a fine free kick.

The Gunners are title favourites for a reason, as they sit 5 points clear at the top of the table. Arteta is leading his side to their first title in over two decades and it is now theirs to lose.

Speaking via Snabbare, Petit has claimed that Arteta must lift the title if he is to stay as head coach or potentially be let go.

"Arsenal definitely need, must, and have to win a trophy, a big one. Honestly, they have improved over the last two or three seasons, but they lost control of the second part of the season for the same reasons, injured players, important players missing in the starting eleven.

"For me, the most important thing for them is to win the Premier League. The Premier League is the most difficult championship in the world. The Premier League is ten months of hard work, fighting every single weekend to win three points. It's not the same as the Champions League.

"I think the fans and the players, the club, the entire club is tired of looking at Chelsea winning titles, even Spurs won a trophy last season. So I think everybody is tired. They definitely think, 'This is our season.’ And they have to win it.

"It's so important for Mikel Arteta. If he doesn't win the title at the end of the season, it will be very difficult for him to stay at the club."

Arsenal, runners-up in the Premier League for the past three seasons, spent £250M in last summer’s transfer window. That spending now needs to be justified, or Arteta may face being sacked at the end of what could be another disappointing season.
