He told Canal 11: "Since I was little, I've dreamed of winning the World Cup, and it's not just my dream - it's all Portuguese's dream."
Before the dream of a World Cup title can be realised, Portugal must first just qualify for the final round. They meet the Republic of Ireland on Saturday in their latest qualifier.
Fernandes added, "First we will do everything to qualify, and then we will do everything to make that dream come true."
