Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has praised Bruno Fernandes after being named winner of Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award.

The Portugal international picked the award ahead of Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Manchester City’s goal machine Erling Haaland.

With that, he becomes the first Red Devils player since Wayne Rooney in 2010 to receive the honour.

"It's fantastic, I'm delighted for Bruno, I think he fully deserves it," Carrick told Sky Sport.

"I think it's an award like this, judged over such a long period of time, I think whoever gets it is fully deserving of it.

"And I think Bruno, this season that he's had, and certainly since I've been here, how he's performed and the impact that he's had on the group has been fantastic.

"So, yeah, fully deserved and delighted that he's got an award like that, and he's one of ours."

Fernandes is also closing in on Premier League history, needing just one more assist from United’s final three matches to equal the single-season assist record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
