Schmeichel delivered a scathing assessment of Arsenal's performance at Anfield as The Gunners lost 1-0 to league leaders Liverpool and claimed that manager Mikel Arteta are playing "ugly" football which is not good enough.
It was a dull game at Anfield, lit up by Dominik Szoboszlai’s incredible free-kick that saved the affair from being a 0-0 affair. Keown has now claimed that the former Denmark goalkeeper's comments were "deranged" and that he is wrong to attack a side who are still getting into their stride.
"We want more. Arsenal I feel now are at the stage where it’s a mentality change, they need to change gear, they’ve really got to go after it. You’ve got to have the eye of the tiger to really go and win these games. Looking back, I hope we don’t regret it, but it’s too early in the season to write Arsenal off.
"I don’t know if it’s been calm in the media. I’ve listened to some people, sometimes these ex-players like Peter Schmeichel, has said that Arsenal brings something “ugly” to the Premier League. I think that’s deranged, what's he talking about."
The defeat at Anfield was Arsenal’s first of the season and ended with key defender William Saliba being taken off injured. Arsenal face Nottingham Forest this weekend as they try to bounce back but if Schmeichel is right then Saliba’s absence and Arteta’s poor tactics may halt their title chances even further.
