Anthony Gordon's comment on England's style of football has backfired ahead of his move to Barcelona.

Gordon has faced heavy criticism for his underwhelming performance during England's goalless World Cup draw with Ghana on Tuesday night in which the Three Lions looked toothless in attack.

The 25-year-old only had one shot in the game, providing two key passes but failed to impress as fans and pundits ripped into him as he failed to drive the team forward.

What’s worse for Gordon where his comments after the game in which he stated that England should aim to play a Premier League style of football which suits him.

"We want to play (an) athletic style of football. We want to play a Premier League style of football which I think suits me and my strengths," Gordon said on the television broadcast ahead of kick-off.

"So I need to show that, I need to show when I get the opportunity because we've got some players with a lot of quality who can really put me in good positions, so hopefully we see that today."

The media were quick to latch on to his comments, asking why Gordon would switch away from the Premier League if it suits his style so much.

Gordon departed Newcastle for the Spanish giants in a £70M deal in May, signing a five-year contract at the club. It will be interesting to see how he copes in Spain, with a side who do not play the Premier League football that he is accustomed to.
