Cody Gakpo is thriving in the Netherlands squad despite having a poor season with Liverpool.

Brian Brobbey and Gakpo bagged braces against Sweden this week, taking the Dutch to 100 World Cup goals in what was a momentous victory.

Netherlands now top Group F with four points and must next face Tunisia in the final group game as they seek to secure their place in the next round.

Gakpo, who has become a leader in the side, now has scored five goals in seven World Cup matches and has collected 23 goals in 52 international appearances.

Despite his dire form with Liverpool, the 27 year old who is now in his prime, has been loving life with the Netherlands where he admits he has more freedom tactically compared to life under former Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

"It’s a little bit different.

"How I play here, where the coach wants me to be, the freedom that I have at the club," he said, before stopping himself as to not speak badly on Liverpool, "That’s it basically."

The Reds signed Victor Munoz this month and are seeking to bring in Yan Diomande as new manager Andoni Iraola upgrades his attack.

Whether this new side will include Gakpo is unknown but after his impressive World Cup form, Iraola may consider sticking with the Dutchman who is proving himself to be one of the best players at the World Cup this summer.
