Alexander Isak was back in the squad following a groin injury, there was no Mohamed Salah and Giorgi Mamardashvili replaced Freddie Woodman in goal.

However, the biggest news was that Florian Wirtz misses out on not just the starting eleven, but also the entire squad.

Speaking to TNT Sports pre-match, head coach Slot revealed why the German international is ruled out of the clash in what is a huge loss for the Reds.

“He tried everything to be in it. But an infection in the stomach.

“He wasn’t feeling well during the week.

“He tried earlier in the week to train, but in the end things got worse and he wasn’t able to train with us yesterday and isn’t able to be with us today.”

Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai made up Liverpool’s midfield, with a number of academy prospects on the bench as their replacements including Trey Nyoni.

The good news for Liverpool was that Chelsea are without almost all of their wide attacking options for Saturday's game, as Pedro Neto, Alejandro Garnacho, Jesse Derry, Jamie Gittens, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Estevao Willian are absent.

Both sides are suffering major injuries as they aim to qualify for the Champions League in the final 3 league games after a very tough season.
