The Special One is emerging as the top target for Real Madrid president Florentino Perez as he aims to make a dramatic return to the Spanish capital.
Mourinho’s Benfica, who are seven points behind league leaders Porto, are three games away from becoming the only team in Europe to achieve an invincible league season.
This has clearly impressed Perez and the Madrid board who seem keen to pull Mourinho back to the side who are out of the Champions League and La Liga title race.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas was asked about the legendary manager this week and revealed that Mourinho is always good to bring eyes to the Spanish top flight.
"If that's what Real Madrid and its management decide, it will be good for Real Madrid in this case," Tebas said of Mourinho's potential return. "And Mourinho is always a show, a spectacle, and that's good for LaLiga."
Mourinho’s last domestic league title came 11 years ago and his despite Benfica being unbeaten, they trail Porto by seven points with four games left to play.
The former Manchester United boss has also been linked with several other top clubs and the Portugal national team job but it looks to be that he will step back into the Madrid role much to the excitement of fans.
