Mourinho has reportedly been targeted for a sensational return to Real Madrid as he looks to use his strong relationship with Perez to work his way back into the side.

The legendary manager was previously on the Real Madrid bench between 2010 and 2013, won a La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup in a spell that ended in disappointment.

This comes from David Ornstein who reports that Mourinho is close to agreeing a return and is top of the list of replacements for Xabi Alonso

“Jose Mourinho preferred candidate of Florentino Perez to become next Real Madrid head coach.

“Support not universal inside #RMFC but president driving process so 63yo strong contender. ~€3m break clause in Benfica deal.”

Former Liverpool defender Arbeloa has been in charge since Madrid axed Xabi Alonso in January, but the former defender has struggled to control the side who are out of the Champions League and La Liga title race.

Mourinho joined Benfica in September and is under contract until June 2027, but reports claim he has unfinished business in Spain and wants to find more success with Madrid which may include a Champions League title.

Mourinho is waiting for a formal signal from Madrid to activate his clause which is in the region of €3M, allowing either party to break the deal up to 10 days after the final match of this season as per The Athletic.
