Premier League icon Alan Shearer has given his honest thoughts on Harry Kane and England's World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup is within touching distance with the tournament now being less than a week away as teams gear up for what should be an excellent contest.

The Three Lions are aiming to end their lengthy drought for major silverware this year, with captain Kane leading the side into the US, Mexico and Canada.

Kane, who scored 61 goals in 51 appearances, 36 of which were in the Bundesliga is the star man heading into the tournament and fans will hope he can push the side all the way this year.

Speaking before the tournament kicks off, Shearer predicted that England have a chance at claiming glory as long as Kane is in fine form.

“If we defend really well and Harry can do what he’s done, then we have got a live chance of winning it. If we’re going to go deep, then Harry has to fly.

“When you go back to (the 1994 World Cup in the U.S.), you used to see players baking.

“I don’t expect Harry Kane to play every minute of every game. If England are winning comfortably, I don’t think our manager will care about Harry getting a hat trick. He’ll get him off and try and wrap him in cotton wool for the next game.”

Four of the last seven Ballon d'Or awards presented during a World Cup year have been claimed by players who ultimately lifted the iconic trophy. Kane will have his eyes set on the award heading into this summer’s competition where he aims to end 50 years of hurt.
