Liverpool were a 98th-minute penalty away from their first defeat on the opening weekend of a Premier League season since 2012 as they fell to a disappointing 2-2 draw with Newcastle United.
Supporters have argued that the club must sign a midfielder and at least one winger before the transfer window shut as the Reds struggled at both ends of the pitch against the Magpies.
Will Iraola be handed the same opportunity
Iraola is know for his aggressive, pressing football which Liverpool failed to pull off on Saturday. Speaking to talkSPORT Bet slots site, McCoist revealed that the Spanish coach may struggle more on Merseyside as his tactics are under constant scrutiny.
“Iraola did quite a remarkable job at Bournemouth. Absolutely remarkable. You think of (Antoine) Semenyo, (Milos) Kerkez, and the two centre-backs that left, the job they did at Bournemouth was unbelievable. I think they are a club where he can go and do his work and go slightly under the radar.
“He’s not going to get an opportunity to do that at Liverpool. In my opinion, Liverpool had a disappointing season last year. Injuries didn’t help, and not having an in-form Alexander Isak was a massive miss. I don’t think (Florian) Wirtz hit the ground running either.”
Iraola's side could take shape
McCoist continued on Iraola and his suggestion that his players were not quite fit enough in preseason which worried supporters after what was a gruelling season last year.
“I think they’ll get better as the season goes on and he has more time with his players. That’s not to say he can get away without starting the season well, but I’m looking forward to seeing them. Iraola had a couple of strange quotes though, didn’t he?
“He suggested that because players were not fit enough, they weren't able to close down for the full ninety minutes. I thought to myself, that’s an interesting way to look at things.
“I’m not sure I’d be making that public, but it’s great for us that he comes out with these points. It’ll be interesting to see how they start.”
Bradley Barcola and Yankuba Minteh are being seriously pursued by Liverpool but no midfield targets have been identified. Iraola’s side next face Nottingham Forest where fans will hope for a better performance and for Iraola’s tactics to finally take shape.
