The 57-year-old temporarily left Les Bleus’ World Cup base in Boston last week to be with his family, while his assistant took charge of France’s final group-stage victory over Norway.
The French Football Federation requested permission from FIFA for players and staff to wear black armbands in tribute to Deschamps’ late mother, but the governing body rejected the appeal.
Ahead of Tuesday’s Round of 32 clash against Sweden, Deschamps gave a restrained response to the decision, saying he did not know whether such a request was ever likely to be approved.
“It is obviously very difficult and, for my own well-being and that of the French team, I had to leave”, he told the media.
“I don’t know what to say. That doesn’t change anything, and I don’t know whether it would have been possible or not.”
