Brazilian Filipe Luis, 40 years old and currently a free agent, has been appointed head coach of AS Monaco until June 2028, the Principality club announced on Monday. The club had dismissed Belgian Sébastien Pocognoli on June 1st.

Having held the position at Brazilian club Flamengo until March 3rd, when he was dismissed due to disagreements with the president and disappointing results (11th in the league), Filipe Luis had previously won the 2024 Brazilian Cup, the 2025 Brazilian Supercup, the 2025 Campeonato Carioca, the 2025 Brazilian Championship and, most notably, the 2025 Copa Libertadores, achieving a record of 62 wins, 21 draws and 16 losses over two seasons.

A former top-level player, he played for Atletico de Madrid where he won the Spanish league title, the Copa del Rey, was a Champions League finalist and twice won the Europa League. He also played for Chelsea where he became Premier League champion. Filipe Luis also won the 2019 Copa America and the 2013 Confederations Cup with the Brazilian national team, for which he earned 44 caps.

In the Principality, Filipe Luis will experience his first coaching role in Europe. He will be joined by Ivan Palanco as assistant coach and Diogo Linhares as fitness coach, both of whom already worked with him at Flamengo. The coaching staff will also include Antony Santiago, former head of tactical analysis who has been promoted to assistant coach, as well as Jyri Nieminen as goalkeeping coach.

As a coach, Filipe Luis already has experience facing a French club, having lost the final of the most recent Intercontinental Cup with Flamengo in December (1-1, 2-1 on penalties) against PSG.
