This Wednesday, Argentina face England in the World Cup semi-final. With a squad featuring several players from Atlético de Madrid, the Albiceleste have plenty of options on the wings. However, it seems Lionel Scaloni has chosen to favour the left side, to the detriment of Giuliano Simeone.

Julian Alvarez, Thiago Almada, Nico Gonzalez, Giuliano Simeone are all big names in the attacking line-up of Atlético de Madrid, and yet, they are all fighting for Lionel Scaloni’s favour.

While the first has managed to stand out as the tournament has progressed and made a mark by helping his team reach the semi-finals, the others have only had scraps.

On the left, substitutes Almada and Gonzalez have claimed the lion’s share. On the right, Simeone has played just 71 minutes against Jordan.

Plenty of competition on the wings, but little space in reality

The main starters are Alexis Mac Allister and Rodrigo De Paul. Due to Argentina’s 4-1-3-2 tactical set-up, the Inter Miami midfielder has moved out wide to make room for Enzo Fernandez and Leandro Paredes. Already playing on the right for his club, he was naturally the coach’s first choice.

The performances of the two wingers haven’t really given the coach any reason to change his plans. Comfortable both collectively and individually, the players haven’t encouraged any rotation.

Yet, on the bench are several substitutes, including a handful of threatening talents.

On the left, for example, Almada and Gonzalez have been called upon. But rarely for more than 60 minutes for the former, and 55 minutes for the latter.

Competition is a key factor in this situation, but not the only one. Both players are not necessarily starters at Atletico de Madrid either.

Yet they get game time for the national team, while their teammate, Giuliano Simeone, isn’t even considered, despite being the first choice at club level. A curious gap, which doesn’t always work in Argentina’s favour.

The Giuliano enigma

Over the past season, Atletico’s right winger has shown he’s bursting with energy. Fast, combative, effective both in attack and defence, he’s capable of helping his team when all seems lost.

He’s even scored four goals and provided six assists in La Liga, as well as two goals and one assist in the Champions League.

What’s more, he has top-level experience. Used by Diego Simeone in big matches, he knows what’s expected of him. Yet, this doesn’t seem to appeal to Scaloni.

It’s not for lack of trying to fit in. The Argentine has been part of the national squad for two years now. He knows how to interact with his teammates and put himself at the service of the team.

But the Albiceleste coach seems to prefer a more central player, like Lautaro Martinez, to come on in place of Rodrigo de Paul.

The match against England could well require some freshness and youth. Simeone is certainly in a position to provide that for his side. If only he’s given the chance, which could happen, as ESPN reported on Monday after the South American squad’s training session.

There’s a lot at stake. We’ll have to see whether Scaloni was right to stick to his choices, or if he’s been too stubborn.
