Scotland secured their first World Cup win in 36 years as John McGinn's deflected strike took them to the top of Group C with a 1-0 win over Haiti.

The Tartan Army are making their first appearance at a World Cup since 1998, where they didn't win a game, and have already given themselves a fighting chance of reaching the knockout stages.

According to The Athletic's World Cup projection tool, Steve Clarke's men have an 88% chance of reaching the knockout stage at this point after McGinn's 28th-minute goal sent them to the top of Group C.

That was after Brazil and Morocco played out an entertaining 1-1 draw earlier on Saturday, with Scotland putting themselves in a great position to reach the last 32.

An increase to 48 teams at the tournament from 32 means eight of the strongest third-place teams will advance from the group stages.

Scotland's aim would have been to finish in third before the action kicked off, with Brazil and Morocco being heavy favourites to finish first and second.

However, after taking all three points against Haiti, it is entirely possible that Clarke's side could finish in the top two positions, as long as they upset one of the groups big hitters.
