Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed in an interview with ESPN that he wants to remain in charge after the 2026 World Cup.

The Italian has a contract with the CBF until the end of the next World Cup, but is already talking about continuing in charge of Brazil for the next cycle.

Ancelotti said he is very happy to live in Brazil and that his family have also adapted well. The experienced coach put the decision in the hands of the CBF and was open to a contract renewal.

"Yes, I wanted to coach the Brazilian national team (from 2023). Preparing for the World Cup in Brazil is something special. I signed a one-year contract. After the World Cup, everything is open. I think it was right to sign a one-year contract at that time," he said.

"I have no problem if the CBF wants to continue. There is no problem at all. As I said, I'm very happy here, my family too. We can think about it. We have time to talk about it, I have no problem to continue. It would be good (to stay until 2030)," the Brazil captain said in an interview with ESPN.

Chat with Neymar

As well as reflecting on his future with the Brazil national team, Ancelotti revealed what he thinks of his star player Neymar when it comes to putting together his squad for the 2026 World Cup. According to the coach, the star will be judged more on his physical condition than his technique.

"We're not going to look at how Neymar plays, obviously. Everyone knows how talented he is. In modern football, to get the most out of his talent, the player has to be in good physical condition. If he is in top physical condition, he will have no problem to be in the national team. Everyone wants Neymar in the national team in good physical condition," he explained.

Ancelotti also revealed that he spoke to the player during his first FIFA World Cup. According to him, Neymar even knows how he would be used in the national team.

"I spoke to him. He came to the hotel before the game against Paraguay and we spoke about it. It's all clear, the idea is still the same, (I would put him) as an attacking midfielder or striker, he has to play in the centre, he can't play on the wing because modern football needs strikers who have physical quality, it's very important. He can play as a central midfielder without any problem," revealed Ancelotti.

Test for Hugo Souza

One of Ancelotti's ideas for the 2026 World Cup is to prepare a specific goalkeeper for the penalty shootout, where Brazil lost in the last World Cup. The big name in Brazilian football at the moment is Hugo Souza, who was called up by the coach in the last squad. When asked about the Corinthians goalkeeper, Carleto said he should be given more space in the upcoming friendlies.

"I really like Hugo as a goalkeeper, he has personality, character, he's very big, and I think in the next few games we can think about giving him a chance to get used to the team," he praised.

"We are thinking about that, about preparing ourselves, studying penalties, preparing a goalkeeper for penalties because in the knockout phase many... in the past, Brazil had bad luck against Croatia, many quarter-final and round of 16 matches are decided on penalties, so it's something we are thinking about, evaluating," the coach added.
