Jeff Stelling has spoken honestly about Manchester United and captain Bruno Fernandes who may depart this summer.

Last month. Fernandes admitted that it "hurt" to realise the club "wanted me to leave" when Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal proposed a huge offer in the summer to try and lure him away from the Premier League.

Fernandes should stay

The United captain rejected the move to the Saudi Pro League in order to stay at Old Trafford. This was despite Al-Hilal reportedly being open to paying a fee of about £100M and wages of up to £700,000 a week.

Jeff Stelling has been named as the new brand ambassador for OLBG, which will see a new podcast The Jeff Stelling Show launched across all platforms.

Speaking exclusively to Tribal Football, Stelling spoke on the Portuguese international and says he hopes he does not leave the English top flight.

“As far as Bruno goes, well, it looks after the comments he's made in the past week or so, the past few days really. All is not well, clearly, you know, certainly his mind anyway at Manchester United.

“I hope he doesn't go to the Saudi Pro League. I really do because he's a brilliant footballer, still a brilliant footballer, still at the peak of his powers. Does he want to go to what is, I don't care what anybody says, it's a lesser league, you know?”

Are Manchester United still a big club?

Sticking to the subject of the Red Devils, Stelling was asked if the side are still a big club or simply a big brand in the modern day after several years of failure under various managers.

“Well, certainly a big brand. Look, it all depends on how you quantify a big club. I mean, they're a big club financially. They're a big club. They're a big club in terms of their support base nationally and worldwide. But if you quantify a big club purely by success on the field, then no, you'd say no. But they're a big club. They're a big club going through tough times.

“At the moment, football is cyclical, you see so many big clubs who've gone through difficult times, maybe not the giants that are Manchester United. But yeah, I still quantify them as a big club and I think it's guaranteed that one day, probably in the not-too-distant future, they will be back winning things again.”

United sacked Ruben Amorim earlier this month and are now under the guidance of former midfielder Michael Carrick until the end of the season.

The club are set for another trophyless campaign after being knocked out of both cup competitions but if Stelling is right, the cycle will come back around to help United bounce back to where they once were.
