Florian Wirtz's father Hans has defended his son's slow start to life in Liverpool after signing for the club this summer.

Wirtz has struggled to hit the ground running at Anfield, failing to register a single goal or assist from his 10 Premier League matches so far under manager Arne Slot, who has only recently started to get the best out of him against Aston Villa and Real Madrid

The German international has yet to set English football alight but has shown sparks over the past few weeks as he grows into a player worthy of the Liverpool shirt. Now, his father Hans has defended Wirtz who he believes is settling in well so far.

"We are taking things very calmly and also believe that Florian will justify this price," he told ZDF.

"The Premier League is much faster - a back and forth, not as organised as in the Bundesliga, but geared towards pace.

"Florian has settled in well with the team and his teammates certainly recognise his quality."

Wirtz needs time to adapt

The 22-year-old has returned three assists from 15 appearances for Slot’s side to date and put in a world class performance against Madrid as he helped his side to a 2-1 victory.

Former Real Madrid and Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder seems to agree with Hans and believes that Wirtz needs time to adapt to his new surroundings.

“I always say this about players with the German or Dutch mentality. It is the same,” the Dutchman said. “You can play good in your own country but they can have problems adapting in different countries.

“The Dutch and the German players are like that and I see the same happening now with Florian Wirtz.

“He felt comfortable in Germany. He was in the right spot. Now he made a big step and that's difficult because at big clubs you don't have the time to adapt. You already need to be there.

“Slowly, he is getting there but it needs to be faster and it needs to come quickly now, otherwise he’s done.”

Playing Wirtz in a wider position looks to be the answer and Slot as well as Wirtz’s father will hope to see him at his best as the side prepare to face Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
