Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai and captain Virgil van Dijk has praised summer signing Florian Wirtz for his performance against Real Madrid.

Liverpool have bounced back over recent weeks with wins over Aston Villa and now Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night. The Reds had standout performers in Szoboszlai and Conor Bradley but it was Wirtz who Van Dijk praised after collecting three points.

“For the them (new signings) it is about showing what you have already been doing for years. Florian started on the left wing and it is difficult for a defender to have a player in front of you who will go anywhere.

“He played outstanding. Also in defending, he was outstanding. It is just about being able to keep going, find your way into the team and be important. If you’re not, then be important off the pitch.

“We all get judged by what you do on the pitch but step-by-step we will get there.”

Szoboszlai was also quick to back the German international, who has struggled since making the move from Bayer Leverkusen for around £116M.

“I have to mention Flo because he just kept on running, winning the balls, running back, having his chances, giving me almost an assist, so sorry from here as well.”

Manager Arne Slot was also asked about Wirtz and his role in the side as Liverpool prepare to face Manchester City on Sunday afternoon in what should be a thrilling affair.

“I’ve said it many times, and I can say it one more time, but (…) if you come from a different league and you have to play every few days and there are so many away games to be played against certain styles of play, you need to adapt to that,” the coach said.

“That goes for almost everyone, let alone for a player that’s 22. I think he’s working incredibly hard to adapt as soon as he can. And he has been so unlucky throughout his career here at Liverpool, because even today he created so many chances for the team.”
