Wirtz cost the reigning champions around £116M in the summer as the Reds snatched him away from Bayer Leverkusen. The German scored once more this weekend as Liverpool drew 2-2 with Fulham as he continues to improve.
This was his second goal in his last three games in a statistic that shows how the 22-year-old is progressing under manager Arne Slot, who is learning how to get the best out of him.
Van Dijk, who will have helped Wirtz adapt to his new club in the summer, spoke after the draw at the weekend and revealed that the midfielder will have to improve his recovery if he is to succeed.
"Second half, he was good — I agree with that," Van Dijk said. "He has to be important, and he wants to be important so he needs to keep on going and stay fit.
"He sees how intense it is and what the demands are every three or four days. That is something he needs to focus on: his own recovery and being ready to deal with the intensity that he puts in.
"Of course (Wirtz's confidence is growing) but that is absolutely normal. Every human being who plays with more confidence, that will help their performances. It is the same with him. Hopefully it will continue and he keeps progressing."
It hasn't been an ideal start to life for Wirtz, but he is certainly starting to turn heads with his recent performances. The German star has a quick turnaround against Arsenal on Thursday night, where he has another chance to justify his high price tag.
