Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk has backed Hugo Ekitike to succeed after what has been a fine start so far.

Ekitike continued his superb form in front of goal with a brace against Brighton at the weekend as Liverpool made it back-to-back clean sheets after beating Inter Milan 1-0 in midweek.

The Frenchman also made it back-to-back braces in the Premier League when he followed up his double in the 3-3 draw with Leeds last weekend.

It is safe to say that the 23-year-old is on fire at the moment and at just £79M, Ekitike looks to be a summer bargain for manager Arne Slot who certainly knows how to get the best out of him.

Speaking this week, Van Dijk has backed Ekitike to succeed with the Reds but also revealed what he needs to do to keep at his very best.

“I think he's doing well obviously,” the Dutchman said. “Very clinical, I think, great finish. The corner obviously as well.

“I was also behind him but he did it himself! Obviously he's important with his goals and his hard work that he put in.

“He wants more from himself and we all want a lot from him and the rest of the team.

“It's not been an easy season but for him to come in and produce these numbers, that's something we need, we want and he wants.

“He just has to stay calm and keep working and help himself but also the rest of the team and Alex (Isak) as well to be in their best shape. I'm pretty sure he will be fine.”

Ekitike attempted seven shots on goal against Brighton, which is the most of any player in any Liverpool game so far this season. He will hoping for a similar performance against Tottenham this weekend as Liverpool aim to push into the top four.
