Alan Shearer and Joe Cole are dumbfounded by England boss Thomas Tuchel deciding to leave Marc Guehi out of his line up to face Croatia.

The likes of Phil Foden, Lewis Hall, Harry Maguire and Cole Palmer were left at home this summer as Tuchel named his controversial England squad ahead of the World Cup.

Tuchel will officially begin his quest to end 60 years of torture on Wednesday night as his side clash with Croatia in Group L which also consists of Ghana and Panama

Ahead of the game, reports have claimed that Tuchel is set to leave Manchester City defender Marc Guehi on the bench for the clash as he favours the 32 year old who bring a lot of experience to the side.

This has confused fans and pundits alike, especially given Stones’ lack of football this season compared to his Three Lions teammates. Shearer was dumbfounded and admitted that he cannot understand the decision as he spoke ahead of the opening game.

“Judging By the reports, if you believe them, it looks like it’s going to be John Stones and Ezri Konsa so Marc Guehi would be the one to miss out.

“I would start Guehi and Konsa, just because of Stones’ lack of football, he didn’t play much this season and this is obviously a very important game.

“So I would go with Guehi and Konsa. It will be a big surprise if Guehi is left out, not many people wouldn’t have started Guehi in this first game.”

Joe Cole agreed with Shearer, stating: “Same. For me Marc Guehi is the number one centre half in the squad.

“John Stones is a fantastic player and if he can get to the levels he’s got to before he’s England’s best defender. But Guehi was incredible this season. I find it strange that they’re even talking about not playing him.”

Tuchel has a number of selection headaches to deal with ahead of the big match and whatever choice he makes will be seen as controversial when picking a side who are desperate to lift silverware for the first time since 1966. Whether Stones will start will be revealed ahead of kick-off in what should be a thrilling clash.
