Manchester United legend has torn into Manchester City who he believes could be celebrating too soon.

City could climb to the top of the Premier League table if they beat relegation-threatened Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.

This follows their 2-1 win over Arsenal, after which the side City supporters unveiled a banner that read “Panic on the streets of London”, as the players completed their lap of honour.

Players were in high spirits after closing the gap on the league leaders even further, prompting Rooney to comment on such celebrations which he says could have consequences if they do not seal the title.

"(The celebrations) were a bit over the top," Rooney said on Sunday evening.

"It's six games to go for City, it's obviously a big win.

“I just think it's a little bit premature, and it might come back to bite them."

Arsenal, who are chasing their first Premier League title since 2004, next play Newcastle United on Saturday and will hope to bounce back from two losses in a row under manager Mikel Arteta whose side have completely collapsed in recent weeks.

City must beat Burnley if they are to chase down Arsenal in the final stretch of the season where both sides must be perfect if they stand a chance at lifting the trophy.
