Ross Wilson has agreed to become the new sporting director at Newcastle United as he prepares to leave Nottingham Forest.

Wilson will succeed Paul Mitchell after his surprising exit at St James' Park earlier this year. The 41-year-old has been Forest’s sporting director and chief football officer since 2023 and has taken up roles at Rangers and Southampton

As confirmed by journalist Ben Jacobs, Wilson has agreed to leave Forest in what has been a fast moving story on Friday afternoon.

“Breaking: Ross Wilson has agreed to become Newcastle United’s new sporting director.

“#NUFC are now in advanced talks with Nottingham Forest.

“Newcastle have been keeping tabs on Wilson since he was at Rangers.”

The Daily Mail report that manager Eddie Howe reportedly pushed for the appointment of Wilson as the pair have a solid relationship which would be a huge difference to Mitchell who Howe often squabbled with publically.

Wilson's impending departure would also lead to a compensation package, as him leaving leaves a gaping hole at Forest that won’t be filled anytime soon. This move comes around a month after Newcastle confirmed the arrival of David Hopkinson as chief executive officer as the club improves across the board.
