Gyokeres signed last summer for a fee rising above £60million including add-ons and the 27-year-old has disappointed fans since landing in North London with just 6 goals in 22 Premier League appearances.
The Swedish striker has been ripped to shreds by the media, fans and pundits as they try to work out what is wrong with the forward who was scoring goals for fun at Sporting Lisbon.
Merson spoke this week ahead of the clash against Sunderland stated that the Arsenal squad are wary of handing the ball to Gyokeres.
“Arsenal don’t trust him, the players - they never pass to him,” Merson told the Stick to Football podcast.
“They never pass to him. You watch him. Next time he comes short, they go ‘no’,” he continued, gesturing to indicate Arsenal players picking another pass rather than playing the ball to their centre forward.
“If you watch it (Gabriel Jesus’ games) you’ll be surprised,” he added.
“And then Jesus comes on, they just keep giving him it all the time. It’s different.”
Gyokeres only managed 10 touches against Chelsea in the EFL Cup semi-final before fellow striker Kai Havertz came on to secure the win. Havertz and Jesus will be keen to replace Gyokeres who just can’t find his footing in the Premier League after his summer move.
