Former midfielder Darren Fletcher’s son Jack was selected amongst the substitutes for United’s draw against Tottenham before the international break, in a move that excited many fans desperate to see more youth involvement.
United currently have a long-standing record dating back to October 1937 where an academy graduate has been included in every first-team match day squad.
Amorim said “It's really important” for United to continue such a tradition and involve young players who could break through into the first team.
However, Torpey, who arrived from Brentford this season, says he does not want young players included just for the sake of tradition.
“We don’t want it to be a token gesture that we have players in our first team to keep a tradition going,” Torpey told the BBC.
“We want players who are ready, can make an impact and make our first team better, and who our fans can be proud of.
“There is no greater feeling than one of your own stepping out.”
United next face Everton on Monday night and Amorim will deliver a match day squad that may include more young talent who he and Torpey believe are ready to make the step-up and make an impact.
