The newly-crowned Premier League champions had penciled in the game at Deepdale on Sunday in their first pre-season friendly as the side prepares for the new season. However, after the squad attended Jota’s funeral the club are to consult the players on whether they should go ahead and play the game or not.
According to the Liverpool Echo, if the game against Preston does take place, it will be aired on ITV. This is huge news for the club as preseason friendlies are often on LFCTV and much like every preseason friendly do not gather a ton of interest.
A deal was agreed in principle before the end of June that the game would be broadcast but now after Jota’s tragic death, there is no doubt that the match will attract a lot more interest. It is likely that the club will pay tribute to the Portuguese international whose death shook the footballing world.
Liverpool took the decision to postpone the start of their pre-season training schedule following Jota’s passing but with the game being played on Sunday the 13th of July, it may be enough time for the players to grieve and get back on the pitch to pay their respects.
