The 17-year-old striker opted to join the Premier League champions in a deal worth £200,000 despite reportedly agreeing to sign for Arsenal just a few weeks prior. Wright made his debut for Liverpool Under-21s on Saturday as the club confirmed the move on Monday morning.
“Liverpool FC have completed the signing of Will Wright from Salford City.
“Wright debuted in November 2024 when he featured in an EFL Trophy tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers U21s, and then earlier this year he played once in the Emirates FA Cup and twice in League Two.
“He linked up with Rob Page’s Liverpool U21s squad last week and made his first appearance on Saturday, featuring for the final half-hour of a goalless draw with Hull City at the Academy.”
Wright’s football education has largely taken place outside of the academy system and the Liverpool academy should be perfect for his development. Reports suggest that the distance from the club to his family as well as the opportunities with The Reds convinced him to make the move which will anger Arsenal who looked like they were on the cusp of snapping him up.
His move underlines the club’s strategy of recruiting promising young talent and integrating them into their elite pathway system. He follows in the footsteps of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jarell Quansah who have followed that pathway in recent years alongside many other world-class talent who are playing for top Premier League sides.
